We aim to produce exceptional community emergency medicine physicians, emphasizing the special skill set that is necessary when multiple levels of sub specialist support are not immediately available. This skill set involves developing strong medical decision making, comfort with procedures, developing clear physician to physician communication skills, and learning the intricacies of departmental management.

West Michigan EM is uniquely suited to provide residents exposure and expertise in the practice of community-based EM. There are no other competing residencies for procedures or resuscitations. Critical Care Team? That’s you. Stroke Team? You again. Trauma? You. We expect that when you leave here, you will be an excellent clinician that your partners, ED staff, and students trust to handle any scenario. Our residents enjoy life along Lake Michigan, and the FAMILY atmosphere we have created over the past few years.
We are a PGY 1-4 program accredited by the ACGME. The majority of your time will be spent in our brand-new 10-story state of the art Level II Trauma center based in Muskegon, Michigan and boasts over 100,000 yearly ED visits. We also have a new, state of the art simulation center and continue to expand our educational opportunities! Our Mercy Saint Mary site is also a Level II Trauma center and the the regional stroke center located in beautiful downtown Grand Rapids.

Muskegon, Michigan is an economically diverse city along the shores of Lake Michigan and the area is a popular vacation destination with plenty of opportunity for culture and outdoor activities. It is 3 hours away from Detroit and Chicago. Residents enjoy the fact that Mercy Health is the singular hospital system in the immediate area. With this, you will have the opportunity to manage a very diverse population, with high acuity pathology.
